SYNOPSIS:
This is a sad farewell story between a loyal general and his wife; the general would rather die than surrender.
BACKGROUND:
This story happened at the time when the Qing Dynasty was about to replace the Ming Dynasty. The valiant general, Si Ho-faat, with his weak Ming army, was trying to protect the city of Yangzhou, from the strong Qing army. Admitting the inevitable outcome, he met, for the last time, with his wife by the river. The general would proudly die than to surrender to the enemy. Despite his wife’s effort to convince him to think otherwise and offering to die on his behalf, the general killed himself as the Qing army approached. His wife’s grief was beyond words.
