BACKGROUND:
One of the most gifted and prolific poets of the Tong Dynasty was Lee Yuk (AD 937-978), also known as the Last Lee Emperor. But fate cast him as the emperor. He spent his time writing poems and ignored the affairs of state. His empire was defeated by the Soong army. Upon the death of his first wife, Empress Jau, he married her younger sister, and named her Little Empress Jau. This second wife remained true to him until his death. Lee Yuk was held captive by the Soong emperor and endured many hardships and acts of disgrace including the rape of his wife. While in captivity, he continued to write poems. His poems changed from expounding the beauty of nature to expressing his emotional tumult. Eventually he was offered poisoned wine and died in captivity, but his poems remained with us till today.
