Saving the Prince

Director:  Soa-Yip Ho
Lyrics: Chung-Yim Chan
Anson Lin as Eunuch Chan Lam
Rainbow Chan as Chambermaid Kau-jyu

SYNOPSIS:
Concubines Lei and Lau were both pregnant. Lei gave birth to a baby boy. Lau bribed the delivery maid and ordered the chambermaid Kau-jyu to replace the baby prince with a raccoon and drown the baby prince in the river. However the kind-hearted chambermaid schemed with Eunuch Lam to save the prince, and arranged for him to be raised secretly by the emperor’s brother.

BACKGROUND:
This is roughly based on history of the Soong Dynasty (AD 960—1279.) This is one of the many cases solved by the righteous Justice Baau. The emperor was displeased with Lei for giving birth to an animal and cast her into the cold palace. Lau’ son died at a young age; she then adopted Lei’s son who later became the emperor. With the help of sympathetic eunuchs, Lei escaped. While begging for food one day, she encountered Justice Baau, who solved this complicated case. With shrewd words, Justice Baau led the emperor to recognize Lei as his mother. Lau was so disgraced that she killed herself.
